The FDIC Has Been Left Holding Substantial Toxic CDO Debt

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which insures deposits and manages failed banks placed in receivership, among other things, has received toxic collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) with a “book value” of over $400 million from approximately two dozen failed banks around the country. In this case, “book value” means cost basis.

What Financial Re-Regulation?

In two weeks, I am supposed to speak on a panel entitled “Financial Re-regulation.” My question is, what re-regulation? To me, re-regulation means you would reverse some step that you took toward deregulation. But the new financial reform bill does not reverse any of those steps, as far as I know

Democrats kill Michele Bachmann’s attempt to freeze federal salaries

Here’s her own words from her YouTube channel: After a series of procedures on the Floor of the House, House Democrats voted to table a bill that would eliminate the proposed federal employee pay raise scheduled to go into effect next year and also freeze the pay for Members of Congress. Rather than cut spending as the people have asked, Democrats have passed the buck yet again.

Ways to Succeed by Cost Cutting Ideas in Shasta County

Re-blogged by 0 agents Ways to Succeed by Cost Cutting Innovative Ideas in Shasta County Early in my campaign, I made it known both verbally and in writing that one of the characteristics of my campaign platform was to, in an effort to be a true advocate for the taxpayer, look for ways that the county could save money in cost cutting ideas. From fleet management to inter office cooperation, I would look at the Assessor Recorder office in terms of efficiency and cost effectiveness..from the taxpayer and business owner point of view. I was ridiculed, being told that was not in the job description of the Assessor Recorder

Rent Sucking

Economists use the term “rent seeking” to refer to people investing resources in getting government favors. In the Concise Encyclopedia article I wrote on this, I explain why I think the term is inappropriate. But if rent seeking were the appropriate term, then what Tyler Cowen quoted about Greece today could be called “rent sucking.” Key quote : AirSea’s odyssey illustrates one of the key problems preventing Greece from generating the economic growth it needs to pay off its heavy debts: Critics say a sprawling civil service has tried to secure its own survival through an opaque patchwork of fees, taxes and red tape.

Investors Have Sustained Huge Losses Investing in Small Banks

The large number of bank failures over the past two years has resulted in big financial losses for investors owning stock in those banks. In most cases, failed banks are taken over by the FDIC, which arranges for the operations to be assumed by another bank — free of the liabilities of the failed bank

On the dialogics of cultures and populations

Over at GNXP, Razib Khan put up a post on the historical demographics of German Jews as compared to the current demographics of American Jews that I thought might interest you.[I]n regards to the future of the American Jewry I think the story outlined in Amos Elon’s The Pity of It All: A Portrait of the German-Jewish Epoch, 1743-1933 may serve as a possible vision of the future. Elon notes that

BP Suspends "Top Kill" For Second Time After Trying Two Junk Shots. Less Than 10% of Injection Fluids are Staying Inside the Leaking Pipes

As I reported yesterday, the “Top Kill” attempt to stop the oil flow using mud had failed, and BP would now try to use a “junk shot” to close the leaks in the pipe using various debris. The New York Times is now reporting that the junk shot approach is not going well: The company [again] suspended pumping operations at 2:30 a.m. Friday after two “junk shot” attempts, said the technician, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the efforts.

The Eco-Socialist Alternative: Capitalist Destruction or New Civilization?

Gustavo Fernández Colón – Another Green World The most serious aspect of the crisis facing the global capitalist system is not the bankruptcy of financial corporations, or the global economic downturn, or the discrediting of its institutions of political control. It is the environmental crisis caused by the irrational destruction of nature, to the point of jeopardizing the ability of self-regeneration of the ecosystems on which our survival depends.
