[analysis] No fare deal for London or Venezuela
Not many Londoners can be happy as they grope through the frozen murkiness of the commute to their first days back at work after the winter break. Adding to their misery is London’s mayor, Boris Johnson, who has made their journey much more expensive with huge fare rises. By Alex Holland – The Samosa read more

Does Lockerbie Parallel 9/11?
As AFP notes : A BBC investigation has cast doubt on key evidence in the case against the Libyan convicted of blowing up a US jet over the Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988, the broadcaster said Wednesday. A tiny fragment of the timer allegedly used to blow up Pan Am flight 103 — crucial in linking Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi to the bomb — was not properly tested and was also unlikely to have survived the explosion, it said…

Cool Dublin
Last year I posted an entry calling attention to the weak evidence of an upward trend in the temperature data for Dublin. As we learned from the debates about climate data before the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, it is important for scientists to explore data that do not neatly fit their models. So I thought it would be worth adding another year to the material I posted last year

Stark Raving Mad?
by Edward Hugh: Barcelona Not necessarily, but he is causing one hell of a fuss today. The Stark in question here is, of course, ECB Executive Board member Juergen Stark, who stated in an interview with the Italian Newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore that, in his opionion, the European Union would not help bail out Greece if the need were to arise. Certainly the initial reports of his statements sent shock waves round the globe

What Do the Pending Home Sale Numbers Mean?
The report released today by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) on pending home sales shows that housing is down: Associated Press notes that the housing market may be headed for a “double-dip” downturn over the winter, and that the report “adds to worries industry is mostly propped up by government stimulus”. Remember that pending home sales figures are based on contracts which have been written, but have not yet closed. As NAR notes : The Pending Home Sales Index [is] a forward-looking indicator based on contracts signed …

On Russian immigration to China and false common knowledge about demographics
I’ve earlier blogged about the slim lilelihood that Chinese immigrants are going to “colonize’ and take over the Russian Far East. In the final installment of a five-part Foreignm Policy/Slate series on China’s role in Russian border zones, Joshua Kucera suggests that the balance of power between the two countries is such that, rather than Chinese populating Russia, Russians are moving across the

Carbon Tariffs on Out-of-State Coal Energy
Via Sallie James of Cato , I came across this story : Minnesota recently enacted a plan to tax electricity generated by carbon-intensive methods in North Dakota–specifically, a carbon fee of $4 to $34 per ton of CO2 emissions in addition to the normal cost of coal power. Naturally, North Dakota's utilities are none too happy about this development.

Why We Fight
Slavery is almost over in Bolivia, yo. I mean life still sort of sucks for most of the Guarani people and it ain’t going to be easy in the next year or generation or two or whatever but can we just all take a deep breath and acknowledge that fucking race-based SLAVERY, which has existed in Bolivia since colonial times until like LAST YEAR, is just about gone now

Barton Biggs: 1 in 10 Chance of Anarchy in the U.S.
Today, Paul Farrell quoted Barton Biggs as predicting the breakdown of civilization and anarchy: In his 2008 bestseller “Wealth, War and Wisdom” former Morgan Stanley research guru Barton Biggs warns us to prepare for a “breakdown of civilization … Your safe haven must be self-sufficient and capable of growing some kind of food … It should be well-stocked with seed, fertilizer, canned food, wine, medicine, clothes, etc ..

Here is a sample of headlines about Dick Cheney from the last 24 hours: Ron Paul slams Cheney: US ‘doing exactly what bin Laden planned’ Olbermann: Cheney ‘nothing more, nothing less’ than traitor [Congressman] Grayson: Did Satan write Cheney’s book introduction? [analysis] Latin America’s Decade
The 1990s was the worst that America has ever lived. The debt crisis — with its consequences: IMF, letters of intent, tax adjustments, etc… — Military dictatorships opened the way for it to impose neoliberal governments in almost every continent. We became the world region with the greatest amount of neoliberal governments and their more radical procedures.

Is Spain Getting Left Behind?
by Edward Hugh: Barcelona This not unreasonable question was asked today by Ralph Atkins on the FT’s Money Supply Blog : The economic news from Spain has turned more worrisome. Eurozone purchasing managers’ indices for manufacturing showed the region’s recovery humming along nicely (December’s final index reading at 51.6, up from 51.2 in November, was in line with the preliminary estimate released last month)

[letter] Policy towards Iran
I am a great admirer of President Chavez, its government and what is doing for Latina America. I am however in complete disagreement on the position on Iran. I understand that “my enemy’s enemy is my friend” but the Iranian government is a dreadful religious fascist dictatorship which stands against most if not all the thing we support as socialist

“Corporate Governance in the Wake of the Global Financial Crisis: Challenges and Solutions”
2009 was the year that painfully reminded us about the importance of good corporate governance – and the dangers of the lack thereof. If companies do not have solid internal structures necessary to operate with fairness, accountability, transparency, and responsibility, they not only can’t ensure the sustainability of their own performance, but also endanger the economy as a whole. The global financial crisis has shown that much
