Last week our Lunch & Learn presentation was about Not-for-profit Board Governance.  We added another session on April 23rd because we had such a great turnout for the original presentation.  One of the take-away ideas a lot of attendees left with was preparing new members for board orientation by doing the following: • Plan to meet with the new member before the first board meeting. • Prepare a board member manual that includes the following: – Bylaws & articles of incorporation – Program services description – Current budget – Recent financial statements and audit, if applicable – List of board members with full contact info – Committee lists – Staff assignments – Year of minutes – Strategic plan document • Arrange for a tour of organization. • Discuss potential committee assignments.

Parker, whose work appears in The Ledger and more than 400 other newspapers, is known for her witty columns on political and moral issues. Parker was one of four Pulitzer recipients at The Post.

Diane Ravitch of NYU talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the ideas in her new book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education. Ravitch argues that the two most popular education reform movements, accountability and choice, have had unintended consequences that have done great harm to the current generation of students. She argues that the accountability and testing provisions in legislation like No Child Left Behind and similar reforms have actually corrupted the testing process, taken time away from subjects other than math and reading, and failed even to boost success in math and reading.

If you examine this chart of US birthrates created by Calculated Risk based on data from the US NCHS, you should notice that there was a spike in the rate during the WWII years; it goes up between 1939 and 1943, then drops again briefly before beginning the surge frequently referred to as the “baby boom”. A lot of press and marketing have been generated hyping the “baby boom”
