Spain Is A Serious Country

by Edward Hugh: Barcelona José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Spain’s prime minister, said in Davos this week : “We are a serious country and we will fulfil our promises.” With these words Spain’s Prime Minister sought, during his visit to Davos last week to reassure international investors that Spain, despite the severity of the recession it is currently suffering, and the major challenges facing its banking system, is not about to become another Greece. Just to prove the point he had Labour Minister Celestino Corbacho and Economy Minister Elena Salgado announce in short order that a) Spanish citizens are going to work two more years each in the longer term, and b) face continuing and sweeping cuts in services and increases in taxes in the short term

Price Reductions on Off-Patent Drugs

The news that the government has negotiated a 40% reduction in prices with the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association for 300 off-patent drugs (announcements here and here ) got the warm fuzzy feel-good treatment on last night’s RTE News at 9 (the word patent did not make its way into the two-minute report).   This is, of course, undoubtedly good news, particularly for those with regular prescriptions for these drugs.

Chilean lessons

Jeff Frankel has a piece on what Chile can teach the rest of the world here . The Irish fiscal debate could usefully move in this direction. Dean Baker TPM Café, February 1, 2010 Truthout, February 1, 2010 See article on original website Our political leaders continually assert that we should be thanking them that we are not in a second Great Depression rather than complaining about how bad things are. The second Great Depression theme came up repeatedly in the debate over the reappointment of Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke. It also featured prominently in Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner’s defense of his handling of the AIG bailout.

How Democrat policies cause unemployment to increase

Consider this article from the Washington Post. (H/T Belmont Club via ECM) How Democrats prevent job creation Most of the article talks about how Obama’s temporary hand-outs will not create any lasting jobs – they’ll simply go away as soon as the government stops taking money from the private sector to pay for these public works projects. But then the article talks about free trade and how free trade creates jobs

I had the pleasure of meeting Alex and Ali de Bold at a number of tech related networking events.  As an up and coming start-up with lots of influence in the industry I was eager to help them out.  It took some patience to find the right premises as there were not a lot of vacancies at the time and both Ali and Alex had a solid vision on the type of space that would suit the company.  Further, it wasn’t the smoothest transaction trying to deal with Allied Properties and getting all of the construction covered and amortized into the rental rate.  However, at the end of the day we secured a lease, had the space built out to their specs and moved in on schedule.  If you would like to know more about ChickAdvisor.com you can check them out here !
