On Russian immigration to China and false common knowledge about demographics

I’ve earlier blogged about the slim lilelihood that Chinese immigrants are going to “colonize’ and take over the Russian Far East. In the final installment of a five-part Foreignm Policy/Slate series on China’s role in Russian border zones, Joshua Kucera suggests that the balance of power between the two countries is such that, rather than Chinese populating Russia, Russians are moving across the

Carbon Tariffs on Out-of-State Coal Energy

Via Sallie James of Cato , I came across this story : Minnesota recently enacted a plan to tax electricity generated by carbon-intensive methods in North Dakota–specifically, a carbon fee of $4 to $34 per ton of CO2 emissions in addition to the normal cost of coal power. Naturally, North Dakota's utilities are none too happy about this development.

Why We Fight

Slavery is almost over in Bolivia, yo. I mean life still sort of sucks for most of the Guarani people and it ain’t going to be easy in the next year or generation or two or whatever but can we just all take a deep breath and acknowledge that fucking race-based SLAVERY, which has existed in Bolivia since colonial times until like LAST YEAR, is just about gone now

Barton Biggs: 1 in 10 Chance of Anarchy in the U.S.

Today, Paul Farrell quoted Barton Biggs as predicting the breakdown of civilization and anarchy: In his 2008 bestseller “Wealth, War and Wisdom” former Morgan Stanley research guru Barton Biggs warns us to prepare for a “breakdown of civilization … Your safe haven must be self-sufficient and capable of growing some kind of food … It should be well-stocked with seed, fertilizer, canned food, wine, medicine, clothes, etc ..

Is Dick Cheney Really That Bad?

Here is a sample of headlines about Dick Cheney from the last 24 hours: Ron Paul slams Cheney: US ‘doing exactly what bin Laden planned’ Olbermann: Cheney ‘nothing more, nothing less’ than traitor [Congressman] Grayson: Did Satan write Cheney’s book introduction? Dick Cheney’s Role in Al Qaeda’s Yemeni Resurgence Is Cheney really that bad? To get beneath the surface of the headlines to find out, I am re-posting a roundup of Cheney’s background which I first published in February 2006 (slightly updated).

[analysis] Latin America’s Decade

The 1990s was the worst that America has ever lived. The debt crisis — with its consequences: IMF, letters of intent, tax adjustments, etc… — Military dictatorships opened the way for it to impose neoliberal governments in almost every continent. We became the world region with the greatest amount of neoliberal governments and their more radical procedures.

Is Spain Getting Left Behind?

by Edward Hugh: Barcelona This not unreasonable question was asked today by Ralph Atkins on the FT’s Money Supply Blog : The economic news from Spain has turned more worrisome. Eurozone purchasing managers’ indices for manufacturing showed the region’s recovery humming along nicely (December’s final index reading at 51.6, up from 51.2 in November, was in line with the preliminary estimate released last month)

[letter] Policy towards Iran

I am a great admirer of President Chavez, its government and what is doing for Latina America. I am however in complete disagreement on the position on Iran. I understand that “my enemy’s enemy is my friend” but the Iranian government is a dreadful religious fascist dictatorship which stands against most if not all the thing we support as socialist

“Corporate Governance in the Wake of the Global Financial Crisis: Challenges and Solutions”

2009 was the year that painfully reminded us about the importance of good corporate governance – and the dangers of the lack thereof. If companies do not have solid internal structures necessary to operate with fairness, accountability, transparency, and responsibility, they not only can’t ensure the sustainability of their own performance, but also endanger the economy as a whole. The global financial crisis has shown that much

[news] Venezuela Implements Measures to Curb Commercial Energy Use

Mérida, January 4 th 2010 (Venezuelanalysis.com) – Following months of regular blackouts in some regions of Venezuela, the government has implemented energy saving measures, requiring companies to submit plans to save 20% of their electricity usage, regulating the usage of lighting for advertising, and creating schedules of electricity usage for shopping centres, casinos, and bingo halls. The Ministry for Electricity’s measures went into effect on 21 December, and the state owned National Electricity Corporation (Corpoelec) is charged with implementing them. Dear Brazil, WTF? We Treated You Like Family

For the last thousand years or so, the United States has led the world on its March toward Freedom with such unique innovations as the free market and the three-fifths compromise and the Snuggie, only to find that sometimes the Free World just cold stabs us in the back or otherwise tragically refuses to embrace our awesomeness. Now we find out Brazil is inexplicably ignoring its Jeffersonian values by…talking with Chinamen? This is an utter betrayal, obvs, but also it is super confusing, for journalists .

How emigration made Barbados rich

The Caribbean Sea’s islands are perfect arenas for the study of the interactions between populations and economies. The Caribbean Sea’s integration into the world economy in the 15th and 16th centuries saw complete replacement of the pre-Columbian population by vast numbers of migrants, voluntary and otherwise, from Africa and Europe, these migrants forming slavery-based plantation societies

Global Output Continues Its Rise As Asian Manufacturing Surges Ahead

by Edward Hugh: Barcelona Global manufacturing industry ended 2009 on what seems to be a fairly positive footing, with the JPMorgan Global Manufacturing PMI posting a comfortable 55.0 in December, up from 53.7 in November, significantly above that critical 50 growth/contraction dividing line. December’s was the highest reading for 44 months, and the headline Global PMI has now remained in expansion territory for each of the past six months

A Reform Opportunity by Decree

On November 23, Jordan’s King Abdullah surprised the nation by dissolving parliament half way through its mandate and calling for elections under a new elections law. Jordanians are not new to these sudden changes but as my organization, the International Republican Institute’s (IRI), most recent national public opinion poll showed, only seven percent of respondents were satisfied with parliament’s performance. In addition to low approval ratings, observers speculate a key reason for parliament’s dismissal is belief that some conservative parliamentarians were an impediment to the passage of important free market reforms needed to attract investment during a global economic downturn

That "Staggering" Greek Deficit Continues To Stagger Onwards and Upwards

by Edward Hugh: Barcelona Only a few short weeks ago the financial and economic world declared itself staggered to learn that the 2009 Greek fiscal deficit was going to come in at 12.7% (mind you, as the conservative Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad pointed out , there was plenty of evidence of what was coming available long before for those who really wanted to look into the matter). Well, now get ready to be staggered again, since according to a spate of articles that have started appearing in the Greek press, the number which only so very recently had us all reeling in shock may be on its way up again, if only by “a few tenths of a percentage point”.
